The next morning, Caiden woke to an empty bed. Stretching, he sat up, feeling the sheets beside him. They were cold. D had gotten up some time ago. Movement caught his eye, and he smiled. D stood outside on the balcony, arms leaning on the rail as he stared off at who knew what. Seagulls called to the sea and the ocean responded. Dawn was approaching, golds and yellows bleeding into the purples and blues. For a split second, Caiden could fool himself into believing he was on a tropical vacation with his sexy new man.

After getting up, he walked around the end of the bed and out onto the balcony, stepping up behind D and wrapping his arms around his waist, chuckling when D jumped.

“Easy there, tiger. Just me.” He let his chin rest on D’s shoulder, his morning stiffness rubbing against the seam of D’s boxer-briefs over his crease. Talk about an incredible ass. Would D let him fuck him? That was a question for another time. For now, he’d enjoy D’s firm muscles beneath his hands. He slid one hand down to cup D, humming at the half-hard cock he found there.

“We need to get dressed. Alpha will be calling soon,” D murmured, moving out of Caiden’s embrace.

“What’s wrong?” Caiden asked, following him inside. Something was going on. He might not have known D long, but in the short amount of time he’d known him, he’d become adept at reading the grumpy man.

“Nothing. I didn’t sleep well. I usually don’t when I’m on a mission, especially with the safe house being so close to the target.”

“Oh, right.” That made sense. Caiden followed D to the bed and took hold of his wrist, turning him to face Caiden. He slipped his arms around D’s neck and brushed his lips over D’s. “How about we take a shower, and you let me relax you?”

D removed Caiden’s arms from around him, and Caiden frowned. It had to be more than a bad night’s sleep.

“I already showered. Why don’t you take yours and I make us some breakfast?” D kissed him, a quick brush of the lips, before he was out of the room.

Caiden wasn’t stupid. Something was off. Why wouldn’t D confide in him? Had he not earned D’s trust by now?

You know what, I’m going to let him be. Maybe D needed a little time to recenter himself. A lot had happened in a few short days. Caiden was moving fast, far too fast. He needed to slow his roll. How could the guy not be freaking out? D had probably never expected to see him again, and then Caiden showed up out of the blue, they’re thrust into a mission together, and not long after start having sex. Caiden shook his head at himself. Jesus, give the guy room to breathe.

Caiden left to shower and get dressed.

The kitchen smelled amazing, and Caiden resisted the urge to attach himself to D’s back like an octopus, especially with D standing
